Typing in Armenian is an essential step when you start learning the language.

Setting up an Armenian keyboard on your computer or phone takes just a few seconds.

You don’t need to buy a physical keyboard or download suspicious software to do this.

Every major operating system already has built-in support for the Armenian alphabet.

I’ll show you exactly how to enable the Armenian keyboard on any device you own.

How to install on windows

Windows includes full support for the Armenian language right out of the box.

Open your Windows Settings from the Start menu.

Click on “Time & Language” from the settings options.

Select “Language” or “Language & region” from the sidebar menu.

Under the “Preferred languages” section, click the button that says “Add a language”.

Type “Armenian” into the search bar and select it from the list.

Click “Next” and then “Install” to add the keyboard to your system.

You can now switch between English and Armenian by pressing the Windows key + Spacebar at the same time.

How to install on mac

Adding an Armenian keyboard on macOS is incredibly straightforward.

Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen and select “System Settings” (or “System Preferences” on older versions).

Scroll down and click on “Keyboard” in the left sidebar.

Look for the “Text Input” section and click the “Edit” button next to “Input Sources”.

Click the small ”+” (plus) icon in the bottom-left corner of the window.

Search for “Armenian” in the search box.

Select your preferred Armenian layout and click “Add”.

You can now switch languages by clicking the flag icon in your top menu bar or by pressing Control + Space.

How to install on iPhone and iPad

Your iOS device already has an Armenian keyboard ready to be activated.

Open the “Settings” app on your iPhone or iPad.

Tap on “General” and then scroll down to tap on “Keyboard”.

Tap on “Keyboards” at the very top of the screen.

Select “Add New Keyboard” from the bottom of your active keyboards list.

Scroll down or use the search bar to find and select “Armenian”.

To type in Armenian, open any app with a text field and tap the small globe icon in the bottom-left corner of your keyboard.

How to install on android

Most Android devices use Gboard (Google Keyboard) as their default typing tool.

Open the “Settings” app on your Android phone.

Scroll down and tap on “System”, then tap on “Languages & input”.

Select “On-screen keyboard” and then choose “Gboard”.

Tap on “Languages” at the very top of the menu.

Tap the “Add keyboard” button at the bottom of the screen.

Search for “Armenian” and select it.

You can now switch languages by tapping the globe icon or long-pressing the spacebar while typing.

Phonetic vs typewriter layouts

When you add an Armenian keyboard to a computer, you’ll usually see options like “Armenian (Phonetic)” and “Armenian (Typewriter)”.

You should almost always choose the Phonetic layout as a language learner.

The phonetic keyboard maps Armenian letters to their English sound equivalents.

For example, pressing the “A” key will type the Armenian letter “Ա”.

Pressing the “B” key will type the Armenian letter “Բ”.

This layout makes typing incredibly intuitive for native English speakers.

The typewriter layout is based on old physical Armenian typewriters from the Soviet era.

Its letter placement is completely different from a standard English QWERTY keyboard.

Unless you grew up using physical Armenian keyboards in Armenia, the typewriter layout will be very frustrating to use.
